Yamaha Agrees to Lease YZR-M1 Engines to Independent Teams

Good news for independent teams interested in participating in the MotoGP Championship, Yamaha has finally signed an initial three-year leasing arrangement with MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports SL, to supply its YZR-M1 engines on an annual lease basis to independent teams.

As per the agreement, the engine lease program will initially operate for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons, and it will come with virtually no support, and no additional engine development. The teams opting for the YZR-M1 Engine will be responsible for their own engine improvements, and will be free to develop their own race bike around the engine or contract an independent chassis manufacturer such as FTR or Kalex to build the complete race bike.

Full details including pricing will be announced soon. Teams who are interested in with this program can contact either Dorna or Yamaha for further information.

This program should be more affordable opt for the independent teams, and they will be more competitive against the factory teams.
