KTM has unveiled its new electric scooter concept, the KTM E-Speed, at the 2013 Tokyo Motorcycle Show.
Based on KTM’s first electric bike, the Freeride E dirtbike, the KTM E-Speed concept scooter has the same lithium ion battery and powertrain concept but designed “to offer a comparable solution for urban areas.” That’s why the KTM E-Speed’s motor (14.8 hp and 26.6 ft-lb of torque) has less power than the Freeride E’s (29.5 hp and 30.9 ft-lb of torque). The electric motor is powered by 4.36kWh lithium ion battery and sends power to the rear wheel via a belt drive.
Its lithium ion battery is good to power the electric scooter to a top wrack of 85kph (53 mph) and a range of 40 miles (64 km), and when running out, it can be fully charged within two hours on a regular 220V socket. The E-Speed also comes equipped with regenerative braking (ABS brakes with 220mm discs at both front and rear) to help charge the onboard battery.
This 140-kgs off-road moto-scooter has unique, simple chassis design – constructed from hybrid steel trellis light metal frame with a separate subframe for the front suspension – with two small polymer air deflectors, a mounted slender seat, a single piston with a linkage to the right side of its 14-inch front wheel, and a conventional swingarm with a linked WP shock for rear suspension.
